Project Technical Advisory Committee hold quarterly meeting

The Project National Coordinator Patrick Kiara, Deputy Coordinator Susan Otieno, and the component Leads presented the accomplishments of the project, the challenges faced and what had been done to address them.

The PTAC provides technical guidance in the implementation of the KEMFSED project. It is chaired by Fisheries and Blue Economy Secretary Rodrick Kundu. The two co-chairs are the Kenya Fisheries Service Director-General and County Executive Committee Blue Economy Caucus.

After the meeting, the committee visited various groups in Kwale that have benefitted from KEMFSED grants to witness first-hand their progress in implementing projects to improve their livelihoods.

At Dzombo, in Kwale’s Lunga Lunga sub-county, the committee interacted with members of the Tupendane self-help group, which got a grant for a business to add value to their maize crop. The group of 17 women and one man grows and trades in maize. They have bought a mill to produce flour and chicken feed.

The PTAC also visited Jipe Raha, a 15-member group that got a Sh1.35 million grant to improve their fish business. The group procured freezers and coolers for fish preservation.

Shimoni Fisherfolk, the third group visited, bought a boat, freezers, and cooler boxes. They can now go fishing further into the sea, catching more and bigger fish.

The PTAC committee members who attended the meeting include the DG Kenya Fisheries Service Daniel Mungai, CECs Patterson Mwagona (Kilifi) and Faiz Fankupi (Lamu), Kenya Fish Marketing Acting CEO Charles Ogwang, National Environment Management Authority representative Wilfred Osumo, Council of Governors representative Barbara Awuor, JASSCOM Coordinator Protus and Western Indian Ocean BMU Network representative Somom N. Somo.
